What is a viatologist?

You may have heard the term "viatologist" discussed in these
newsgroups. But what does this mean exactly?

A viatologist is someone who scientifically studies roads, then shares
his or her findings to the public. By making use of the scientific
method (http://www.heinemann.co.za/index.php?
option=com_content&task=view&id=57&Itemid=51), a viatologist measures
roadway apparati and makes conclusions based on empirical evidence.
Some interests in viatology may include, but are not limited to,
pavement studies, effects of lighting fixtures on nighttime traffic
flow, bridge design, etc.

As a viatologist conducts his or her own studies, new studies that
enrich international understanding of roads is tantamount its
propserity. Viatology is by no means a new study; in fact, it has
been conducted for centuries though the term is just a few years old.

For more information information on viatology, including foreign
translations of the term and etymology thereof, visit http://wwtl.info/#viatology.html
.

Cheers,

Carl Rogers

I'm glad you asked. Allow me to educate you:

Put simply, Viatology is the study of things that are wrong. So, when you
see someone using the word Viatology you know that they're talking about
something which is wrong. Often, very wrong. Or lots of things which are
wrong.

I've always preferred something along the lines of "Road Scholar": I not only
drive the roads, but research them, nit unlike a university scholar doing
research.

This funky word "Viatologist" isn't even in Webster's Dictionary. It sounds so
much like Gynecologist or Proctologist maybe Phlebotomist that it almost
sounds clinical. A Gynecologist practices Gynecology. Does a Viatologist
practice Viatology like a Proctologist practices Proctology. But I'm no
Doctor...hell I'm not even Gaiilfreyan <g>, so it does not seem right to claim
one is a medical practitioner as being a Viatologist would insinuate.

I prefer Road Scholar, though I'm sure many of my fellow hobbyists prefer
"Road Geek". But that's OK. Call yourself whatever you choose to call
yourself: Road Scholar, Road Geek, Viatologist. Hell, call yourself a Canned
Spam if you want to... I don't care and it doesn't matter.

Thank you and good day :)

I object to the claim that "viatology" is a form of science. There are no
hypotheses, experiments, measurements, and so on. If it is anything academic
at all, it is more like history. "Viatorian" would perhaps be a better
neologism, other than its near match with the word "Victorian". But I like
your "Road Scholar", too.

Or debate. A real scientist would debate the subject with other
people.
A real scientist would not treat a debating forum as a write only
medium like Carl Rogers does.

Rogers has invented this word, and is trying to force it into use by
spamming the word in forums and onto online dictionaries.

Call yourself what you want, but don't try and force others to use
your term, especially without any debate like what Rogers does.

Don't worry about the non-word "viatology". Nobody except Carl and his
socks ever use it, not counting responses to his annoying posts that
equate it to something disgusting.
