The first sign is recent, as evidenced by the line under the exit tab.
The 3-destination mileage signs appeared around 2005, and were full of
mistakes. The contractor blamed it on Microsoft. See

By the way, does anyone know if there's a good way to get from 24 or
495 to Route 3 in that area? About a year ago, I was stuck in traffic
on 128 south, and thought I'd take 24 to 495 to 44 to get to 3. But
the at-grade section of 44 had some really stupid traffic lights --
long left arrows and side street greens even when nobody was there.
Has it improved since then?
It could also be helpful for avoiding traffic coming back from the
Cape. I recently got stuck in slow traffic on Route 3 all the way
from Kingston to the Braintree Split. I didn't see any obvious back
roads once I was past the 44 exit.
