You may have come across the term 'viatology' in these newsgroups.
But what does it mean?

Viatology is the scientific study of roads. By using empirical
observation and scientific forms of measurement, one can share
information about roads w/ the international community. Viatology
takes advantage of the scientific method to report findings, as
discussed at http://www.skoool.ie/skoool/examcentre_sc.asp?id=2841

Though the term viatology is not more than a few years old, it has
actually been in practice since the dawn of western civilisation! In
fact, the "via" in viatology is eponymous to a well-traveled
thoroughfare in the Roman Empire, the "Via Appia" (Appian Way).
Earliest evidence of viatology include the drawing of maps leading to
and from Rome.

Some of the topics discussed in viatology include, but are not limited
to: the definition of route-numbering standards, the various types of
pavement and which types are best suited to a given environment,
median overpass heights, etc.

Those who participate in viatology are referred to as 'viatologists'.
It is important to note that viatologists share findings based through
their own research. Those who simply share newspaper articles about
road conditions in their neighborhood don't participate in viatology
-- they're instead participating in consumer behaviour!

For more information on viatology, including its etymology thereof,
refer to to http://wwtl.info/viatology.html . With your contributions
to viatology, as prescribed in steps of the scientific method,
viatology may one day become a scholastic field of study in
universities domestic and abroad.

Carl Rogers
